The War on Weeds initiative is being run throughout this month as part of the Sunshine Coast Council’s commitment to the Community Nature Conservation Programme. The scheme helps volunteers to maintain and improve local outdoor areas, including bushland, waterways, and wetlands.
During the project, residents are being encouraged to help restore their local habitats and to remove weeds from their own gardens. A number of weed swap events will be organised to help local people learn more about how they can get involved, and enable them to exchange the weeds they find for free native trees.
Poster printing has been used to provide details of the events, and Posters will be on display at libraries and council service centres across the Sunshine Coast
The Council’s environment portfolio holder, Councillor Jenny McKay, said everyone had a part to play in keeping the Sunshine Coast looking good. She said:
“Over 70% of the invasive environmental weeds in South East Queensland are actually escaped garden weeds. Everyone has a role to play in looking after our environment and removing weeds from the garden and replacing them with native trees is one great way to make a positive contribution.”
