A budget airline could be attracted back to the Sunshine Coast.
Peter Pallot, the general manager of Sunshine Coast Airport (SCA), revealed that there have been discussions between the airport and Tigerair.
Tigerair first flew to SCA nearly a decade ago. Since then, the airline cut its service due to a shortage of tourists. Air New Zealand is resuming its service between the Sunshine Coast and Auckland soon, which may boost the need for postcard printing within Maroochydore.
Tigerair is not yet ready to announce a resumption of its flights to SCA. The organisation, once called Tiger Airlines, declared that it was curtailing its service back in 2014. A spokesperson for Tigerair stated:
"The airline industry is highly competitive and as always we make announcements about network developments at the appropriate time, in due course. We're an airline that evolves based on demand so quite simply the more demand for our new services, the more opportunity for additional services down the track."
Tigerair has reportedly been engaged in a bidding conflict with rival airline Jetstar, which has arguably been beneficial for some of those passengers seeking Australian flights. For example, Jetstar has offered a special fare to SCA, which included a free Sydney return. This special Jetstar deal has expired in recent weeks, but the competitive nature of the industry is likely to lead to more deals.
