Young surf lifesaving enthusiasts are gearing up to compete in this year’s Queensland State Youth Championships to be held in Maroochydore, Queensland.
Last year, more than 1500 of Queensland’s most accomplished junior lifesavers vied for glory in the surf and sand at Kirra Beach on the Gold Coast.
Organisers have made a few alterations to the 2015 event, including a name change for the state-wide blue-ribbon sports event for juniors previously known as the Junior Surf Life Saving Championships.
Revised age groups now apply for the State Youth Championships, to include Under 11s to Under 15s.
Organisers describe the major event as one of the most prestigious for junior lifesavers, and one which showcases future champions as they progress through the ranks.
Poster printing has been a popular way to promote the major Sunshine Coast event, which draws thousands of people to the area each year.
The three-day competition will be held from March 20 to 22 at Maroochydore, followed on March 27 to 29 by the Senior State Championships, which is the ultimate event on Queensland’s surf lifesaving calendar.
The senior championship age groups have also changed to include Under 17s to open age groups.
An estimated 2,000 entrants are expected to contest the senior event, which was last year won by Northcliffe on the Gold Coast ahead of Mooloolaba and Currumbin, placed second and third respectively.
