New three-storey learning centre set to open

The multi-storey $16.4 million senior learning centre at Mountain Creek State High School is close to completion.

The construction is one of a dozen school projects on the Sunshine Coast, including the nearby $4.6 million learning centre at Maroochydore State High School, currently being funded by the state government.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the funding was effectively skilling today’s students for tomorrow’s jobs adding:

"This will be a fantastic new three-storey centre which will primarily be used for Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects.”

The construction will include two flexible learning spaces, 16 general learning spaces, two collaborative spaces, two robotics labs, three science labs, three STEM learning areas, amenities and a staff space. The work is being carried out by Queensland firm FK Gardner and Sons.

Community representatives, school staff, students and parents all contributed to the graphic design elements, construction and development stages of the project as part of the Facilities Reference Group.

Principal of Mountain Creek State High School Darrin Edwards explained that the new centre would assist the school in handling continuously growing enrolments.

Future projects planned for Sunshine Coast schools include a new secondary school at Caloundra South at an estimated cost of $60 million and a $35 million primary school for Palmview, both of which are expected to open in 2021. A special school is also planned for the Sunshine Coast.
