Not content with competing only against other seniors, the crew has trained all year in readiness to go head-to-head against the world’s elite. All the training seems to have paid off, the team finishing an impressive 11th out of 104 boats.
Competitors had to work hard against the tide for the full 66km from Molokai all the way to Oahu but fortunately the huge surf, which created chaos two weeks ago in the women’s event, failed to eventuate. The large-bodied Mooloolaba team was perfectly poised to take advantage of conditions and power through the smaller waves. The team finished the race an incredible 29 places ahead of the next best team in their category.
The Mooloolaba team has competed in the event consecutively for the past 19 years, with 2012 its 13th triumph. Mooloolaba has now won nine masters’ and four senior masters’ world championships. An ecstatic captain-coach, Ron Grabbe, effused via a phone call from Hawaii,
“We absolutely demoralised the opposition…everyone’s raving about how does a bunch of 50-year-olds get 11th in the world.”
The crew members are local Mooloolaba legends and an iconic brand for postcard and brochure printing companies to get behind in promoting our regions healthy outdoor lifestyle. It would be no surprise if Posters and Flyers were to be seen in the area in support of the team.Get a Free Quote for Flyers Get a Free Quote for Posters
