Innovative mobile library service arrives on Sunshine Coast

Maroochydore, Queensland residents are among thousands to benefit from the introduction of the new Sunshine Coast Council’s mobile library.

Mayor Mark Jamieson said the new state of the art service would provide the community with access to the latest technology.

During the September launch of the new mobile library, the Mayor said both it and the existing service, which had received a make over, provided a major boost to library services.

He said the aim was to improve access to technology and information for library patrons in the region.

Mayor Jamieson said the new mobile library was fully equipped and even included a self-service machine that sped up the checkout system of items from the library.

Painted a vibrant purple colour, the library vehicle will be easy to spot as it travels throughout the region. It has been built to handle the sometimes rugged rural roads, according to the Mayor.

He said more than 5,000 people access the mobile library service each month on its route, which includes 24 stops.

Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay acknowledge, the important role libraries played in the community, and said the Library network on the Sunshine Coast featured two mobile libraries and 8 library branches servicing 124,000 members.

The mobile service provides the latest technology including iPads, and library members can access everything from online resources and DVDs to printing services and free WIFI.
