Dogs can dine out under new regulations

Dog owners in Maroochydore will be able to take their furry friends to local cafes and restaurants under changes to council policy.

The Sunshine City Council has announced it is amending its local laws to match state regulations with regard to dogs and outdoor areas.

The change means that, if they meet certain criteria, cafes and restaurants with outdoor dining areas may be able to allow canines on parts of their premises.

Venue owners will have the final say over whether they wish to let people bring dogs, if they are eligible to do so.

Jenny McKay, the community programs portfolio councillor, said an education program would be established to help food business owners understand the new rules and whether or not they meet criteria.

Printing services could be used to create information packs to help local business owners understand what the change means for them.

Councillor McKay said there was a lot of support for the change, but hygiene standards must be kept. She said:

“Council recognises that many owners love the companionship of their dog while enjoying a coffee or meal at our restaurants and cafes, however our local laws also have to reflect the requirements of Food Standards Australia New Zealand.”

Dog owners will also be given information to make sure they are taking their dogs out responsibly and not breaking the regulations.
