Cruise passengers set to visit the Sunshine Coast

Mooloolaba’s economy may get an extra tourism boost this year with the announcement that a cruise ship will dock in the area.

Cruise company P&O has said the Pacific Pearl, a superliner, will stop in Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast in August during a cruise that lasts four days and departs from Sydney. Passengers from the ship will be transferred from the vessel to the resort by tenders, disembarking at the Underwater World Sea Life Aquarium jetty.

P&O Cruises’ senior vice president, Tammy Marshall, said the company was exploring the short cruise market, with many customers indicating an interest in shorter sailings rather than the traditional long cruises with many stops. She said:

“Pacific Pearl’s visit to Mooloolaba is a destination ‘test drive’ for P&O Cruises, which could well become the forerunner of more short-break cruises to the Sunshine Coast.

“There is a growing trend towards short-break cruises and we are constantly looking for great new destinations to add to the appeal of our cruise itineraries.”

Local businesses, particularly those in the retail and hospitality sectors, are likely to benefit from the influx of tourists. Flyer printing could be used to advertise opening hours, and include special offers for cruise ship passengers.

The cruise, which will have a food and wine theme, is due to leave Sydney on Thursday 14th August, and arrives in Mooloolaba on Saturday 16th August.
