Beekeeping workshop to take place in Maroochydore

An information session on the Varroa Mite has been scheduled especially for beekeepers in Maroochydore and surrounding areas. This event is run by the National Varroa Mite Management Program.

The Varroa Mite is a parasite that lives and feeds mainly on the larvae and pupae of honeybees, causing weaknesses and malformation of the developing bees, as well as transmitting viruses within the hive.

Infestation is sometimes not apparent for three to four years, and can cause larvae to become ill, as well as initiating weight loss and a reduced lifespan of worker bees. Additionally, honeybees can have impaired flight and may be less likely to return to the colony.

Three experienced trainers will be running the workshop taking place this month. They will educate attendees on the background of the mite, and teach students how to recognise and treat the infestation, including organic options. There will also be information on tracking the location of the brood, frame rotation and management and how to keep comprehensive records.

Informative event programs are often advertised by means of local poster printing in the community.

The Varroa Management Training Workshop is taking place on Saturday, 22 February, from 9am until 3pm. The venue is the Maroochy RSL, which can be found at 105 Memorial Avenue in Maroochydore. The workshop is free to attend, but it is necessary to register for a place. Morning tea and lunch is provided.
