Southport residents urged to get close to nature
Lovers of the environment from Southport and across the Gold Coast are being invited to take part in a new nature-inspired initiative run by Gold Coast City Council.
The new NaturallyGC 2020-21 programme is offering community members a chance to participate in over 850 low-cost and free activities, events and workshops that focus on nature.
Acting Mayor of the Gold Coast Donna Gates launched the programme recently, saying that providing people with an opportunity to enjoy green time over screen time in such a unique part of the world as the Gold Coast was especially important during such a challenging year. She added:
The programme, Gates said, has something to suit everyone, ranging from wildlife shows, nature photography and tree planting to guided bushwalks, citizen science and learning more about indigenous culture. In addition, this year's programme also features some online activities that will enable residents to discover new and exciting aspects of their own back yards.
Environmental topics and activities such as these have often been the focus of many school and community-based educational brochure printing campaigns.
City funding for NaturallyGC also extends to the provision of programmes focusing on environmental education delivered by some community organisations. Registration for programmed events is essential.

“The Gold Coast is one of Australia’s most bio-diverse cities, and I encourage the community to get out and explore any of our 13,600 hectares of open space and 790 natural park areas."
