Postcards in Southport
The development of Southport, Queensland, as a tourist destination began from its early settlement in 1874. Back then it was known as a marine township ideally located at the mouth of the Nerang river, where it could welcome sea travellers. The site itself had been identified during the 1860s as a likely base to be developed as a recreational watering place and, as history dictates, that is exactly the direction it took. Surveyor Martin Lavelle saw the area’s potential, with attributes including a sandy beach, a backdrop of level country, and fine views of the Pacific Ocean. These features remain dominant images on postcards in Southport. Promoting local sights to attract increased trade for businesses is all part of the service provided by the team here at Minuteman Press.
By 1877, town blocks of land were being built upon, with Balaclutha noted as the first house in the area. A demand for accommodation led to many of the early homes being used as weekenders or let out during holiday periods. Camping on the beaches was also popular. It wasn’t long before Southport became a magnet for families of wealthy graziers and successful businessmen from Brisbane. Postcards from Southport became popular keepsakes.
As one of south-east Queensland’s first resort and holiday townships, Southport also attracted businesses. In fact, for many years it was known as the commercial and administrative centre of the Gold Coast. Here at Minuteman Press, our staff will assist everyone from sole agencies to major corporations with all of their printing requirements, including those who cater to the tourist market with the production of flyers, brochures and postcards in Southport.
