HOTA to commission artists for opening exhibition
Next year's opening of the new multi-million dollar HOTA Gallery has sparked an invitation to artists from Southport and across the Gold Coast to apply to have their work included in a special exhibition.
Each successful applicant, of which 20 are being sought, will receive $5,000 of the $100,000 in total commissions allocated to create an artwork for display in the exhibition. CEO of HOTA Criena Gehrke said that Gold Coast artists had a unique opportunity to create something special for the inaugural 2021 programme at the new $60.5m gallery, adding:
The majority of these works are to be placed on display in the new gallery's major 1000m2 exhibition area, while some will also be on show outdoors and in parklands surrounding the gallery. Such exhibitions are often publicised widely through the media and via promotional brochure printing campaigns.
Gehrke said ideas for outdoor and indoor works are welcome and can range from various outdoor art that is able to be well executed in the setting to performance, free-standing sculptures and video projects.
Submissions will be accepted from new and established artists who are aged 18 and over until June 19 and the 20 successful applicants are to receive a notification by July 3. All artwork to be included in the exhibition has a completion date of January 2021.

“We have huge talent in our community and to highlight their work in this incredible gallery pays homage to that. Artists are at the core of our vision; without artists there is no home of the arts.”
