New Berlin non-profit receives unexpected gift

A non-profit from New Berlin received a surprise donation.

A Doll Like Me is operated by a New Berlin woman, Amy Jandrisevits, who has created over 1,500 personalized dolls over the past 10 years, making it possible for kids with skin disorders or missing limbs to discover a doll that resembles them. She runs almost entirely on donations and one of her latest commissions came from the most unlikely of sources.

Norah Ducat, age 7, made the contribution. To sponsor the doll, she combined all of her birthday money, weekly allowance, and pennies saved in a piggy bank. Jandrisevits started working on the request immediately and made a doll for Bonnie, a girl in the United Kingdom. Jennie, Ducat's mother, hopes that her daughter's generosity spreads.

The waitlist for Jandrisevits’ dolls can be 2,000-people long at times. Her unique dolls have been sent to 36 nations and all 50 states have received them. In order to meet demand, she is hoping that she will receive more donations.

Jandrisevits commented:
"Kindness is a superpower. I think that we underestimate how it can change someone’s life."

Creative people, from sewists and dollmakers to graphic design experts, usually appreciate voluntary support. Jandrisevits has said that A Doll Like Me would also benefit from a volunteer sewing assistant in addition to financial donations.
