First responders attend document clinic

New Berlin first responders will have a chance to get their important documents in order.

Wisconsin Wills for Heroes - New Berlin Police Department is part of the Wisconsin Wills for Heroes Clinics program. It provides no-cost estate planning services to first responders in a structured, clinic-style setting. The initiative focuses on helping participants prepare essential legal documents, including wills and related estate planning materials, that are often difficult to prioritize due to the demands of public safety work.

The clinic relies on the participation of volunteer professionals to function effectively. Attorneys, support personnel, and notaries are needed to assist with various aspects of the process, and might want to bring their Business Cards to the event for a professional touch.

Attorneys with estate planning experience may act as clinic estate planning specialists, serving as the designated experts available to answer questions from both first responders and other volunteers. Each clinic includes one estate planning specialist providing guidance and ensuring accuracy in document preparation.

Other volunteer attorneys meet individually with first responders to review completed estate planning questionnaires and generate customized documents using laptops and HotDocs, a document assembly software program. While prior experience in estate planning is not required for this role, attorneys must complete an OnDemand training before volunteering at a clinic.

The event will be held at the New Berlin Police Department on January 31, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.
