Village decides to continue grading homework
At the start of the upcoming school year, Menomonee Falls High School will continue its practice of officially grading student homework, having phased it out four years ago.
Homework could count for half of a student’s grade before 2010, at which point the school board decided not to include it as part of a student's grade. Homework's effect on grades could be as much as 10% according to the new guidelines agreed upon unanimously by the school board.
The Menomonee Falls High School math department spent a year analyzing how homework assignments affect student performance. Gary Klitz, the Director of Teaching and Learning, said that students who had done their homework had a lower chance of failing assessments. He was well aware of homework's benefit on student achievement and the aforementioned study yielded the same results.
Honors geometry and algebra II teach Casey Ulrich agrees, stating that homework is about reinforcing the lesson and the constant assessment of the material. Ulrich also commented on how teaching methods are always changing to meet the needs of modern students.
Enacting a change in policy means showing these results to the school board and having several visuals prepared to explain the data. A print company could make the ideas stand out better to the intended audience so the data is easily understood.
