Wisconsin librarians to meet in Brookfield
The Wisconsin Association of Academic Librarians (abbreviated WAAL) will be holding its annual convention in Brookfield this April, looking to gather workers in university and college libraries.
The theme of the 2020 WAAL conference will be “Risk + Reward”, asking attendees to examine the balance between challenging and overextending themselves. The two-day event will feature keynote presentations from Megan McGee, executive director of the Milwaukee-based “story slam” Ex Fabula, and University of Washington Associate Dean Lauren Pressley.
While for some the word “librarian” may conjure up images of a bookish shusher, modern libraries include everything from video games to printing services, making conferences like these important for staying on top of technological and professional developments.
Like most academic conferences, WAAL 2020 will largely consist of seminars and sessions organized by attendees and submitted ahead of time. In addition to conventional talks, there will be sessions in which poster printing can be used to present information visually, five-minute “lightning talks” and a new series of “failure confessions”, aimed at demystifying academic and professional success and combating “imposter syndrome.”
Presentation titles include “Scheduling, Swim Lanes and Superpowers: Engaging Student Employees”, “Data in the Key of Bee: Sonifying Web of Science Metadata,” and “It Slices, It Dices, It Juliennes: The Multiple Uses of Faculty Publication Data.”
The 2020 meeting of the Wisconsin Library Association will take place on April 16 and 17 at the Sheraton Milwaukee Brookfield Hotel.
