What's Happening in Brookfield, WI…

Local students go wild in nature-themed workshop

Five Brookfield East Advance Placement (AP) biology students took part in an unusual learning experience, ‘Trees For Tomorrow’, last month.

A class convened for five Brookfield students, it was something few have ever experienced. A natural resources school, Trees For Tomorrow, offers student workshops held in a summer-camp-like environment each fall.

The accredited nonprofit works with schools throughout Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin to provide educational programs of differing lengths, with some lasting several days. The Brookfield students were allowed to take two days off school to get closer to nature in the Wisconsin wilderness.

Teachers select from more than 50 courses in order to customize a workshop for their students. This no doubt means that a brochure or catalog printing service was utilized to enable teachers to make their selections.

Brookfield East students took a four-day workshop hosted by Trees For Tomorrow at Eagle River along with around 20 Marion and Clintonville students. The workshop, Northwoods Ecology, was sponsored by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative in Wisconsin and includes lessons on tree identification, water chemistry, wolves, and survival skills.

The student’s wilderness experience wasn’t totally devoid of creature comforts, with the students being housed in dormitories and taking their meals in a mess hall. For some students, however, the experience was a complete departure from anything they had ever experienced.
