Festival City Symphony to perform in Brookfield

Milwaukee’s Festival City Symphony will perform a special live-streamed concert providing a survey of American classical music in Brookfield this month.

The event, called America Reflected, will see the Symphony, led by Music Director Carter Simmons, perform works by a trio of American composers. The concert will kick off with popular 20th-Century songsmith Aaron Copland’s short piece Letter from Home, a patriotic piece from the World War II era, which will be followed by contemporary composer Jessie Montgomery’s Coincident Dances.

Montgomery’s music is known for combining classical influences with folk, Latin and world music influences. The hour-long concert will conclude with a performance of Howard Hanson’s “Romantic”, one of the first major symphonies to be composed by an American.

The America Reflected concert will be streamed online for purchasers of a “virtual ticket”, which includes access to a live stream as well as an archived version of the video. Many classical groups have turned to live-streamed concerts recently as a way to adapt their performances to current circumstances, often using time-tested means of promotion like brochure printing and word of mouth. The venue will also include limited, socially distant in-person seating.

The Festival City Symphony’s America Reflected Performance will take place on April 21 at the Sharon Lynne Wilson Center for the Arts, with the video streamed online and available for viewing until May 12.
