What's Happening in Brookfield, WI…

Chickens addressed by Brookfield aldermen

The legislative and licensing committee of the City of Brookfield, after extensive research and input, has finally come to a decision on the matter of whether residents should be permitted to keep chickens.

In a 3-2 vote, the committee of alderman for Brookfield has given its approved for an ordinance allowing residents to keep a maximum of four hens if their lot is a minimum of 1/3 of an acre. How the vote played out was not surprising; each of the aldermen voted as they had been inclined for months. Those in favor of moving the proposal to the next level were Jeff McCarthy, Lisa Mellone, and Bill Carnell, and those opposed were Buck Jurken and Gary Mahkorn.

Qualifiers the committee has considered adding to any final measure include the attachment of a two year sunset clause that would expire unless renewed by the common council. Other guidelines presented on Tuesday, May 19 with regard to the chicken ordinance would dictate that any chicken coop should be at last 10 feet from structures and property lines, and that a separate permit should be required for those wishing to run electricity to their coop.

The next step in the city’s chicken saga will take place over the next few weeks, when all 14 aldermen will consider the matter before it gets a final up or down vote.
