What's Happening in Brookfield, WI…

Brookfield 2015 budget a done deal

On Tuesday, November 18, the Brookfield common council passed the city’s 2015 budget, which included a 1.84 levy increase.

Robert Scott, Brookfield’s Director of Finance, outlined significant points of the proposed 2015 city budget at the public hearing that opened the Tuesday night meeting. One important point made by Scott was that, although the 1.84 levy increase would give the city more revenue, residents would be seeing their property taxes go down.

Brookfield will receive an additional $17 in property taxes from residents, with an average assessed home value of $335,000. However, this will be more than offset by an increase in government funding to the technical college, thereby decreasing its projected portion of residents’ tax bills.

According to Scott, city levy increases are tied to the community’s property values. New construction has led to an increase in overall assessed value for Brookfield property. The city has the state’s third-highest tax base, exceeded only by Milwaukee and Madison.

The goal of the Brookfield Department of Finance, as expressed by Director Scott, is to limit costs without negatively affecting residents’ quality of life. Among the many uses local governments have for printing services is supplying residents with information on city services available.

Expenditures in the 2015 budget were assumed to increase from $80.6m in 2014 to $84.5m next year; an increase of 2.4%. The evening concluded with the budget passing unanimously.
