Unique car exhibit now opened in Tacoma

A new exhibit has opened at LeMay – America’s Car Museum in Tacoma. It was organized by the Petersen Automotive Museum.

Called “Reclaimed Rust: The James Hetfield Collection,” the exhibit is the result of the collaboration of many years of some of the best-known custom car builders in the world and the rock music icon, James Hetfield. Among the car builders are Marcel De Lay, Scott Mugford, and Rick Dore.

Hetfield designed the 10 vehicles in the exhibit that were custom built for him. The cars feature chopped toes, removed pillars, billowing fenders, and sinewy silhouettes that push the limits of automotive design and would have never been envisioned by the original manufacturers. In the collection are the Dead Kennedy, which is a 1963 Lincoln Continental built by Hetfield himself; the Crimson Ghost which is a 1937 Ford Coupe; Skyscraper which is a 1953 Buick Skylark; and VooDoo Priest, a 1937 Lincoln Zephyr. Such special exhibits are often promoted throughout a community with poster printing.

Vice Chairman and CEO of America’s Automotive Trust, David Madeira, said that the exhibit demonstrates the immense creativity of Hetfield and his team in designing and building these cars. He added that they reveal the potential of their materials and their tools as opposed to their limits.

The exhibit will run through January 31 2023.
