Tacoma reveals new electric vans to the public
The first hybrid-electric vanpool vans in the South Sound were recently unveiled by the Washington State Department of Transportation (DOT), Tacoma Public Utilities (TPU), and Pierce Transit.
Dignitaries at the unveiling ceremony included representatives from Pierce Transit, the Washington State DOT, and the TPU, as well as Mayor Victoria Woodards, employee commuters, and vanpool drivers.
There will be eight TPU vanpool groups in the Electric Vanpool Pilot Program of Pierce Transit. The hybrid vans will be able to run for 32 miles on battery before needing gasoline or recharging. The vans will be driven to work by vanpool drivers who will charge them at TPU during the day, then drive them on 97% carbon-free electricity.
Among the locations serviced by the vans will be Tacoma, Port Orchard, Puyallup, and Bonney Lake. It is expected that each year the use of these vans will eliminate about 56 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions. Banner printing companies can be hired to create displays throughout the area so that people learn more about such programs and their positive effect on the environment.
Jackie Flowers, Director of the TPU, commented that this was an opportunity to demonstrate the benefits of a carbon-free commute. She expressed her pride in Pierce Transit deciding to select the TPU to set an example for the city and the country.
