Tacoma receives awards for community health

Healthy Communities awards from the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department have been given to the Environmental Services and the Planning and Development Services Departments of the city of Tacoma. These awards celebrate local municipalities that demonstrate exemplary leadership in boosting the success of community health.

Local Print shops can help disseminate news about such awards with Flyers, mailers, and other printing services.

Joe Bushnell, chair of the Board of Health and member of the Tacoma City Council, said that how communities are designed and built influence people’s health and wellbeing. He extended his appreciation to those who received these awards for their hard work.

The Planning and Development Services Department received its award for the McKinley Overlook project which transformed an area that was neglected in the McKinley Hill Neighborhood into a welcoming green space. The Overlook now improves the safety of pedestrians, promotes active transportation, reduces littering and crime, and fosters a sense of pride in the community.

Street murals made possible by the Environmental Services highlight the commitment of the city to environmental education. They raise awareness about stormwater management in historically underserved neighborhoods and foster a sense of pride in the community and place. The murals feature translations in Lushootseed, Vietnamese, Khmer, and Spanish.

Mayor Victoria Woodards said these two projects exemplify the ongoing commitment of the city to improving the wellbeing and life of all residents of Tacoma.
