The city of Tacoma has joined the network of Forests in Cities.
This is an initiative of the Natural Areas Conservancy and brings together representatives from 21 cities across the country in addition to such institutional partners as the Forest Service of the United States Department of Agriculture to advocate for increased support of the management of natural areas and urban forest science. By joining this network, the city will be able to promote the sustainability and health of the natural areas in Tacoma by providing the city access to new research opportunities, resources, and technical training.
News of such collaborative efforts and their benefit for a city are often made known with flyer printing.
Mayor Victoria Woodards expressed her excitement about the city joining the Forests in Cities network. She said that the city is experiencing rapid growth in its population which creates many environmental challenges. She added that the ability to address these challenges in a collaborative fashion will be important for the success of the city.
The team of Tacoma’s Forest in Cities will be joined by Dr. Joey Hulbert from Washington State University. He has had experience in the Forest Health Watch program which engages residents in helping to keep the forests of Tacoma healthy. As part of the Forests in Cities network, Tacoma will increase its efforts to manage its urban forests to create a sustainable and thriving urban forest ecosystem.
