The Tacoma Light Trail is currently underway in the downtown area, featuring close to 30 locations that can best be seen after dark. There are over 50 organizations and artists involved in this event, which is accompanied with a soundtrack.
This event was developed by Rosemary Ponnekanti, a writer and musician, and organizer of Ocean Fest. Artists and venues were enlisted for the Tacoma Light Trail and almost all of them donated their time to the project. They were instructed to create pieces that would uplift and unify the city. The result is a display of lights with themes of reconciliation, healing, joy, hope, and resilience. Ponnekani said this event enables the bringing of light to the community to help people through the current times. Poster printing companies can be hired to create poster so that the community will know where they can find such light displays.
The soundtrack is available as a smartphone app. Sound effects, spoken word, and music automatically begins as walkers along the Light Trail approach different stops along the tour. The audio was selected by the artist who created the work. Maps of the trail are also available on the Light Trail’s website.
All pieces of the Tacoma Light Trail are lit from 5:00 to 9:00 pm every night, and the event will run through Sunday, January 24.
