Tacoma church opens doors to homeless

With the passing of a bill by the Tacoma City Council to prohibit tents in city parks effective this December, one pastor in the city has said he will provide shelter for the homeless who may be affected.

The Metropolitan Development Council, Metro Parks, and Associated Ministries are working together to resolve this issue.

Eric Jackson, the senior pastor at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Tacoma, expressed his feelings of responsibility for caring for those in need. When the vote was taken at the Council meeting, he spoke about providing space in his church for housing these people. Poster printing can be used throughout such cities so the homeless will know where to find shelter during the winter and at other times during the year.

Jackson added that his church is able to provide space for homeless people during the winter months. The church can accommodate up to 40 people comfortably and will also accommodate families. They have done this in the past and is another way that the church can serve the larger community.

There is space in the church for people to store their belongings, and a place for showering, as well as a washer and dryer. Hours for the shelter would be between 7:00 pm and 7:00 am so regular church operations could proceed for the day.
