Historical Posters can provide a link to a community’s past, and in Tacoma, an effort is underway to restore and preserve them for future generations.
In order to help pay the bill for the effort, the Washington State Historical Society is hoping to raise about $5,000.
The Posters show different scenes and celebrations from the city’s history, going back to a time when many thought it would become the largest city in the state. In some of them, the city’s stadium is pictured. At the time, it was the largest of its kind in the world, with seating for 35,000 people.
The cost to restore each of the Posters is approximately $750, and a woman in Seattle has undertaken the task. She will be using paper of the same variety that was used when they were printed 100 years ago. Once they are complete, Copies of them can be produced by a poster printing company for the public to purchase and display in their own homes. These can then serve as fundraising items in their own right to help support the society’s other activities.
Donations to help pay for the restoration are being sought from the public. These who would like to make a donation can do so by visiting the Washington State Historical Society's donation page, which includes pictures of the Posters that are being repaired.
