Public in Tacoma invited to have their say about plastic shopping bags

Several communities in the South Sound have chosen to enact restrictions on plastic Shopping Bags used by businesses, and Tacoma may soon be joining that list.

The city’s Office of Environmental Policy and Sustainability is interested in hearing from the public and other stakeholders about this issue. The final results can be compiled into a report for distribution to those who may be interested in reading it. A printer can use its digital copying equipment to produce as many Copies as are required for this cause.

It has been estimated that each year, as many as two billion plastic disposable Shopping Bags are used in Washington State alone, which can be very damaging to the environment. So far, 13 communities have decided to find ways to lower this number through a variety of measures. In Thurston County, Olympia, and other cities, regulations have been put in place that will restrict or limit their use and, in some cases, even ban them completely.

The city council of Tacoma is investigating the feasibility of doing the same sometime in 2016, and it is trying to find the best way to make that happen.

Until December 20, people, businesses and any others who may want to share their opinion are invited to do so through an online survey that can be found on the city’s website.
