Port of Tacoma highway project gathers pace

Construction will be getting underway on a stretch of highway two miles long that connects Interstate 5 with the Port of Tacoma.

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) said that the SR 167/I-5 to SR 509 New Expressway Project has been discussed for many years, but will now come to fruition as the bid of $376m from Guy F. Atkinson Construction, a contractor, has been accepted to build the highway.

The project will entail building a new highway between SR 509 and Interstate 5 near the port. There will also be a new interchange over Interstate 5 to connect SR 509 to the highway, and a shared-use path along the highway for pedestrians and cyclists. More details can be outlined with flyer printing services to keep those in the community informed about such projects. The environmental aspects of the project will include restoring about 150 acres of streams and wetlands to support the salmon population in the state.

Administrator for the Puget Sound Gateway Program, John White, said that this is a significant step in the goal to directly connect the Port of Tacoma and Interstate 5, and complete SR 167. He said there will be many benefits derived from this project that include expanding non-motorized travel options, reducing the number of trucks on local roads, and improving freight movement in and out of the port.
