The Tacoma Tree Foundation and the city of Tacoma are teaming up for the city’s Community Tree Program.
The focus of this program is to increase the tree canopy in the city with tree giveaways and neighborhood-based planting projects, along with educational activities highlighting the environmental and social benefits of trees. A core component of the program is community engagement.
Residents in the McKinley Hill neighborhood of Tacoma have identified developing a tree planting program as one of their top priorities. Residents are looking to achieve a tree canopy cover of 25% in the business district and 35% in residential areas. Residents in McKinley Hill will be offered 250 street trees by the Community Tree Program through Green Blocks: McKinley Hill.
Residents of the project area will be able to request free trees and will get help with submission of permits, selection of trees, delivery and materials, and tree planting. Brochure printing is often used to provide further details about such programs, their benefits, and implementation.
Mayor Victoria Woodards underlined the importance of partnerships in making the city more liveable for everyone, Mayor Woodards added that she is looking forward to seeing what can be done through this new program with the support of the Tacoma Tree Foundation.
