F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby has been adapted for the stage and will be presented by Tacoma Little Theatre later this month.
The Great Gatsby is the story of the mysterious, wealthy, and possibly criminal Jay Gatsby, and his life in the ‘Roaring Twenties’. The book is at once a romance, a drama, a portrait of a society in disarray, and an indictment of the carelessness and cruelty engendered by great wealth.
The book sees Fitzgerald pit two rich men against each other. Gatsby plays the role of an antihero despite his riches, while Tom Buchanan, who is much wealthier than Gatsby, is a symbol of the corruption that great power can cause. The central theme of the work is the ‘American Dream’, and each reader or viewer is left to decide what that means for them.
The upcoming theater show stars Rodman Bolek as Gatsby, Kelly Mackay as Carraway, and Veronica Tuttell as Daisy Buchanan. Theater management could work with brochure printers to create a colorful souvenir program for the play.
Gatsby runs from January 23 through February 8, with performances on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm, and Sunday matinees at 2:00 pm. There are two school day matinees slated, on January 27 and 29. For more information about the school performances, or to buy tickets, contact the theater.
