Change in roadway construction to improve speed of project

Construction is currently underway on the High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) project for the Interstate-5 Portland Avenue to the southbound exit for the Port of Tacoma.

Construction crews will make a change for travelers going to the city center of Tacoma that will speed up the construction schedule.

The location for exit 133 north on I-5 southbound will be moved to the area of the Port of Tacoma overpass. Those who are going to SR-7 and I-705 will use the same temporary collector/distributor lane and exit as those exiting to Bay Street and Portland Avenue. Local Print shops often assist in spreading the word about such changes in construction plans using Flyers.

Moving the location of the exit can increase the progress on the construction. As there will be a work zone next to the new Puyallup River Bridge on I-5 southbound, there is the potential for work crews to complete their efforts sooner such that travelers will be able to use the bridge by late summer rather than later in the fall.

This HOV project, once completed, will connect HOV lanes to SR-16 and I-5 in Tacoma. It will also include removing the old I-5 bridges over the Puyallup River and building a new one; rebuilding the L Street overpass across I-5; updating lighting, signage, and traffic data sensors; and improving stormwater treatment and collection facilities.
