The Gig Harbor BoatShop will be holding a unique course on building a boat. It will run three days a week over a period of three months, and residents of Tacoma who enjoy boats might be interested in taking the course.
This course is designed to sharpen the woodworking skills of attendees and immerse them in the boatbuilding traditions of the historic Eddon Boatyard in Gig Harbor. Patrick Mahon, a master boatbuilding instructor, will be teaching the course, which will take place from Monday through Wednesday over a period of 12 weeks. Unique courses such as this one are often promoted with flyer printing.
Like a mini boat school, the course will be entirely hands-on and take attendees through the traditional experience of building a boat. Attendees will learn about lofting, mold-making and boat construction, placement of the engine, finish work and the in-between steps. Once students have finished the course, they will have the knowledge and skills of to construct a traditional wooden boat.
The course is designed so that students can have time for other commitments. It will run from Monday, February 10 through Monday, April 20. The hours will be from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Wednesday of each week. Enrollment is limited to six students and the cost is $3,950 per student.
