Seattle class to share safe foraging tips

Foraging for wild foods can be both fun and cut food bills, and thanks to an upcoming workshop, Seattle residents will know how to do it successfully and safely.

This afternoon activity will explore the wide valley of edible plants that can be found in and around the city. The learners will also find out how they can be incorporated into a variety of dishes they already make, or used to make one that is completely new.

The class will teach how to forage for some common edible plants that are easy to identify, such as dandelions and plantain, and the group will also learn how to do so ethically and sustainably. They will find out why they need to be cautious when harvesting in a “brownfield” site, and other tips will be offered as well. The hope is that, when they head for home, they will each have a greater understanding of foraging and also how to use what they collect.

One of the recommendations the organizers give to participants is to bring a camera to take photos of the edible plants they spot. Field guides for an outdoor activity can be sourced from area Stationery printers.

The chance for the general public to learn the fundamentals of foraging will be on offer on August 20. Everyone who registers is asked to be at Rainier Beach Urban Farm and Wetlands, which will be the venue for the activity, by no later than 1:00 pm.
