Festival celebrates Seattle's Arab culture

Ethnic food, dance and music will be at the center of an upcoming festival celebrating Seattle's Arab community.

The two-day event will offer ethnic food and demonstrations of dance and music from the 22 countries that make up the Arab world.

Admission is free for all. The event is part of Seattle Center's Festál series, made up of 23 different festival showcasing cultures and countries all over the world.

The Seattle Arab Festival began in 1993 by the Arab Center of Washington. Besides celebrating Arab culture, the festival was also meant to counter some stigmas and stereotypes of the Arab world, coinciding with the time of the Gulf War. After the ACW disbanded, the festival was continued by the non-profit group, the Seattle Arab Festival (SAF).

Besides food, drink music and dance, there will be special activities for children, workshops, poetry, lectures from prominent local and international Arabs, and Arab movies.

Previous festivals this year include celebrations of the Iranian, Filipino, and Chinese communities. These were converted to virtual festivals due to COVID-19, but the Arab festival is scheduled to be the first in-person event of the season.

The Seattle Arab Festival is scheduled to take place Saturday, August 8 and Sunday, August 9 at the Seattle Center, 305 Harrison Street in Seattle.
