Exhibit highlights the pioneers of pop art and their successors
The Seattle Art Museum is hosting the exhibition ‘Pop Departures’, which will run into early 2015.
The exhibit is a showcase of the pioneers of ‘pop art’, and shows how it has grown and changed since the 1960s. Pop art was greatly influenced by commercial art and two of its pioneering artists, Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, worked as commercial artists at one time. It has now come full circle and influences current advertising graphics.
This show covers many of the artists who came after this duo, including Claes Oldenburg, Barbara Kruger, and Margarita Cabrera. An exhibition catalog is available for purchase and those taking the tour can get a free smartphone audio tour.
One related event taking place this December is a talk with Margarita Cabrera. The artist, who is based in El Paso, will be discussing her processes of working and her sculpture ‘Vocho’.
Those in Seattle who are employed by graphics design or printing companies will no doubt want to catch this show before it closes.
‘Pop Departures’ is showing at the Seattle Museum of Art until January 11, 2015. The SAM Talk with Margarita Cabrera event is taking place on December 10 from 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm. The museum is open Wednesday to Sunday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, and 9:00 pm on Thursdays. It costs $19.50 for adults, $17.50 for seniors, and $12.50 for students and teens.
