A colorful Mexican festival is scheduled for Lynnwood.

Dia de Muertos translates to Day of the Dead, and the 2023 celebration of that tradition is upcoming. This is the sixth time the community will celebrate the day.

Although the name can be seen as morbid, the day is about life, not death. Dia de Muertos originated in Mexico, and is still celebrated there, and in areas where there is a large Mexican population, though it is becoming popular throughout the world. During this time, friends and family gather to share their memories of others who have passed on. Sometimes these gatherings can be very funny, as people tell anecdotes about their loved ones.

The artwork associated with Dia de Muertos is striking, as many people paint their faces to resemble skulls, but often embellish the painting with colorful flowers or other adornments. Skeletons known as Catrinas are also part of the festivities, as are altars and literary calaveras. The calaveras are light-hearted verses or satires written specifically for this day.

There will be contests for the best calaveras, altars, Catrines, and Catrinas, as well as cultural exhibitions, artisanal crafts, traditional dances, live music, family activities, authentic Mexican food, and other resources and local vendors.

Dia de Muertos 2023 is scheduled for Saturday, October 28, from 12.00pm until 5.00pm, at the Lynnwood Convention Center, where organizers of this type of event could use banner printing to create vibrant decorations. Admission is free.
