Lynnwood residents have a chance to pay tribute to a great American leader, and help their community at the same time.
In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday, Lynnwood’s Parks & Recreation Department is organizing a “day of service,” during which time volunteers will remove invasive species and otherwise improve conditions at Scriber Lake Park. The park covers 22 acres and is also a nature preserve. Among the park’s amenities are a nature trail and a floating boardwalk that gives visitors a chance to enjoy peaceful surroundings as they observe wildlife.
When Congress established Martin Luther King Day, it also designated the occasion as a “national day of service,” the only federal holiday to bear this label. Calling it a “day on, not a day off,” lawmakers wanted to encourage citizens to honor Dr. King’s vision, courage, and compassion by helping others.
The assistance could be something like repairing a senior center or school, or cleaning up the natural environment, as is planned in Lynwood. Working together on a project that will better the entire community builds a sense of mutual responsibility and fosters that connection.
The event takes place on Dr. King’s birthday, January 16, from 9:00 am until 12:00 pm. All necessary tools and equipment will be provided. The park is located at 5601 198th Street SW in Lynnwood.
