A number of Washington students recently received scholarships from Comcast, including two young people from Federal Way.
Among the 82 honorees were Zachary McGhee of Decatur High School and Clarence Joshua Arenas, who attends Federal Way High School. They will each receive $1,000 courtesy of the Comcast NBCUniversal's Leaders and Achievers Scholarship.
Comcast Foundation funds the program, which provides one-time scholarships to seniors in high school who are chosen for the leadership skills, academic achievements, and community service. The foundation has awarded over $28m to approximately 27,000 seniors in high schools throughout the country. In the state of Washington, the Comcast Foundation has provided scholarships to more than 1,500 students, giving out a total of more than $1.5m.
Students who win scholarships from this program are recognized as individuals who are working to rise to their potential; who spur their communities to make positive changes; and who are involved with their schools, where their fellow students emulate them. As its philosophy, the foundation believes it is important that young people remain engaged with their communities, even as they start to prepare for their future. The program shows the students that the business community puts great value on civic involvement.
