Getting rid of items that are hard to transport and recycle can be a problem, but Federal Way wants to help residents out.
Each spring, and again in the fall, the city holds recycling events during which residents may drop off a number of items that are usually not collected during pickups at the curb, or that are banned from being disposed of.
These include the likes of appliances, scrap lumber, and scrap metal, but there are some restrictions on their condition. For example, large appliances such as hot water heaters, stoves, ovens, freezers, refrigerators, dishwashers, microwaves, and clothes dryers and washers can be dropped off, but liquids have to be drained from all appliances, and they should be emptied out.
The city will also accept magazines, Books, cardboard, packing peanuts, Styrofoam blocks, batteries, electronics, tires, mattresses, stumps, and branches. The city will give parts and bicycles to Bikes for Kids, tools to the South King Tool Library, and household items that can be reused to the Northwest Center. It will also shred confidential documents.

These events are usually held on Saturdays in April and again in September, and this year is no different. The fall recycling day is September 21, in the parking lot of Wild Waves on Milton Road South. The hours are from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm.
