People who love the sounds of groups like the Del Vikings, the Drifters, and Frankie Valli should plan to be in Federal Way soon.
These bands and many others were known for their doo-wop sound, and now the Doo Wop Project is bringing that music to modern audiences. The six-member group icomprises Broadway veterans who have appeared in such shows as “Jersey Boys,” “Motown: The Musical,” and “A Bronx Tale—the Musical.” Many have television and film appearances to their credit as well.
As part of the Doo Wop Project, they demonstrate the classic tight harmonies of the early groups, and trace the development of the sound from its beginning to today. They begin with the music of groups like the Flamingos, Belmonts, and Crests who were influences on later ensembles such as the Four Seasons, the Temptations, and Smokey Robinson. Doo-wop's influence continues to this day, in music by modern artists like Maroon 5 and Jason Mraz. The Doo Wop Project's collective talent allows the group to recreate, or sometimes reimagine, some of rock and pop's biggest hits. Audiences may hear classics such as “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” a hit for the Tokens; or the Drifters' classic, “There Goes My Baby.”
