Outdoor day to be held in Aberdeen area

Aberdeen residents would enjoy being outdoors and contributing to the community have a chance to do exactly that soon.

As part of the ongoing Lower Satsop Restoration & Protection Program, a work day has been scheduled. The Grays Harbor Stream Team, along with the Grays Harbor Conservation District, will plant native trees. The planting will increase habitat for birds, amphibians, and fish.

The restoration effort has been spurred by the fact that changes in the Lower Satsop River, including flooding, channel migration, and erosion have begun to impact both private and public property, and threaten personal, community, and economic livelihoods. In particular, an avulsion in 2018 changed the river's course. An avulsion is the term for a river that suddenly follows a new channel and cuts off an area of land. This resulted in the loss of a total of almost 800 cubic yards of soil within a few hours.

Organizers tell participants to follow Highway 12 to Keys Road, and follow the road to the sign for the work party. Boots should be worn if participants have them, but work gloves and tools will be provided. In addition, snacks, donuts, and coffee will also be available. However, everyone is asked to bring a mask, and to note that social distancing guidelines will be enforced.

The work is scheduled for March 13, from 10.00 am until 1.00 pm. Banner printing can be used to provide signage for outdoor events like this.
