Aberdeen brings in the new year

An event that is sure to be fun will kick 2022 off in Aberdeen.

Golfers will want to go to the Grays Harbor Country Club in Aberdeen to play in the upcoming New Year Mulligan Tournament. Golfers will probably know the term, but the origin is less obvious.

A mulligan is a do-over. When someone makes a bad shot in a tournament, they may be allowed to take a second shot—a mulligan. The golfer must take the shot from the same spot where he or she made the first attempt. The mulligan will wipe out the original shot.

Mulligans cannot be used in tournaments or other golf outings that are played under the Rules of Golf, but are reserved for casual, friendly rounds, or charity tournaments. In informal situations, mulligans can help speed up play, since someone who made a poor shot will not have to hunt for their ball.

There are at least two stories about the origin of the term. One says that David B. Mulligan, a Canadian golfer, hit what he called a “correction shot” in the 1920s at the Country Club of Montreal. Another version says that in New Jersey in the 1930s, John A. Mulligan asked his partners for a second shot since he had not had time to practice.

The tournament is scheduled for January 1, and the club is at 5300 Central Park Drive. Outings like this are the perfect place for participants to exchange Business Cards.
