Town gearing up for historical weekend

August is the time for all Manassas Civil War buffs to get ready for a Historic Manassas Civil War Weekend.

Later this month, guests will be able to watch medical and military demonstrations, enjoy the music and food, and witness a re-enactment of Stonewall Jackson’s Raid on the local railroad junction.

The museum will open the first thing in the morning to start the proceedings, and the History Mobile will be available later in the afternoon. Artillery Firing will precede the nationally acclaimed Civil War historian Ed Bearss’ keynote address and a traditional live street battle will follow. Also, the Harris Pavilion will have dancing and live music throughout the evening. The night will be capped-off with a tour through the Manassas Confederate Cemetery.

The remaining two days will center primarily on the Liberia Plantation and the lawn in front of the Manassas Museum. The plantation will offer displays of artillery and infantry reenactments, children’s activities, period musical performances, and food. It will also present songs and stories about the Afro-American experience.

This year, there will be a quilt exhibit, a fashion show, and a period tea. The action should provide an opportunity for photographers who wish to convert their work to poster, brochure or postcard printing.

The historical event will be held Friday, August 22 through Sunday, August, 24, from 9:00 am to 9:45 pm, in Old Town Manassas and the Liberia Plantation.
