Manassas performance center has two winter concerts

The Hylton Performing Arts Center, 10960 George Mason Circle, will brighten the winter blahs with two stellar music performances.

On Friday, January 31st, the Manassas-based center will present The Siberian State Symphony Orchestra. Award winning Russian-American Vladimir Lande will lead the Siberian State Symphony Orchestra in an evening of Russian classics.

The program will feature three 19th-Century composers – Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Modest Mussorgsky, and Pyotr Tchaikovsky.

The overture of Rimsky-Korsakov’s opera “Tzar’s Bride” will begin the performance. Piano suite “Pictures at an Exhibition” by Mussorgsky will follow. The finale will be one of Tchaikovsky’s most beloved violin concertos, Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35. The curtain will go up at 8:00 pm.

One hour before the event, there will be a pre-performance discussion in Merchant Hall. Tickets covering both events will run from $33 to $55.

On Saturday, February 8 at 8:00 pm, Merchant Hall will swing with the Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra. This performance will celebrate three 20th century jazz greats in its “Ellington, Basie, and Bird.” This particular evening coincides with the 100th anniversary of Charlie (Bird) Parker’s birth. Artist Director, Jim Carroll, will be leading metro area musicians in these popular jazz hits while playing his alto sax.

One hour before the performance there will be a pre-performance discussion.

Tickets will be $28, $39 and $46. Jazz enthusiasts may have been securing tickets back in August even before the program brochure printing.
