Manassas looks back at the end of the Civil War

Manassas history buffs, and those just looking for something to do this spring, may want to check out the latest in a line of offerings commemorating the sesquicentennial of the final years of the American Civil War.

Next week, a variety of experts will offer anecdotes, facts and little known tidbits regarding the final days of the conflict, and how Manassas played a role in it all.

The symposium will be called, appropriately enough, ‘After the War Symposium: A One Day Symposium on the Effects of the Civil War’. It will be a one-day event focused on the closing months and days of the civil war as seen through the eyes of soldiers, leaders, and those looking to put our country back together.

Speakers will include Dr. Jane Censer, Robert Dunkerly, John Coski, John Hennessy, Emmanuel Dabney, and George Wunderlich. They will speak on topics such as the surrender of the Confederate army, the role women played, the lasting impact on many of the men who fought in the war, and the Freedmen’s Bureau. Attendees may want to bring digital Business Cards for exchanging with other patrons.

The symposium will be given on May 16, at the Old Manassas Courthouse, 9248 Lee Ave., Manassas, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, and will cost $5 per person. Reservations will be required.
