Our Calendars say that it is August and almost time for the annual City of Manassas civil War Commemoration weekend. This year the event will offer its standard tours, demonstrations, speeches and re-enactments.
The keynote speaker this year will be John Hennessy, Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park’s chief historian. Other speakers at the Manassas Museum will be actors who will portray Brian McEnany from West Point Class of 1862, and Bill Backus who participated in the Battle of Kettle Run. There will also be a debate between Virginia Governor Pierpont (USA) and Virginia Governor Smith (CSA). General Ulysses S. Grant, and Mrs. Mary Todd Lincoln will be speaking on Sunday. A presidential news conference will feature Presidents Davis and Lincoln.
Liberia Plantation will have weapons and artillery demonstrations, a fashion show, and a Weir Family cemetery tour. Dylan Pritchett, President Jefferson Davis, President Abraham Lincoln and Robert E. Lee will be giving talks. Matthew Brady, the well-known Civil War photographer will also be making a presentation. Tours will be given of the Liberia House.
The event will be held August, 26th, 27th and 28th at the Manassas Museum at 9101 Prince William Street and at the Liberia Plantation at 8601 Portner Avenue, Manassas. The speeches as the museum will begin at 7:00 pm on the 26th, 12:00 pm on the 27th and 11:00 am on the 28th.The plantation will open at 10:00 am.
