Manassas celebrations well on track

Early next month, the Manassas Train Depot will be the location for the 22nd Annual Manassas Heritage Railway Festival.

The event will be a day of demonstrations, model trains, and live music, at which over 80,000 people are expected to turn up.

Along with the train memorabilia, there will be live performances and specialty vendors. Country and bluegrass will be the music of the day. Model train displays will be provided by local train enthusiasts.

Tickets for rides on the Scenic Excursion train (a J 611 steam engine provided by the Virginia Museum of Transportation) will be $5. The trip will be out to Clifton Falls and back to the Manassas Train Station. Members of the Piedmont Railroaders will narrate railroad history during the trips. Wintery princesses will be entertaining the passengers as well.

New to the festival this year is a tea party with two of the princesses in a downtown establishment. Chances to win a seat at the tea will be hidden in Bags of Hershey Kisses that may be purchased at the depot and at certain local stores.

All train lovers will want to mark their Calendars for this Saturday, June 4. The event will be at the Harris Pavilion 9201 Center Street, Manassas and the nearby Old Town Manassas Train Depot, 9431 West Street starting at 10:00 am. The last train ride will leave at 3:00 pm.
