Manassas celebrates 150 years

The City of Manassas will be celebrating its 150th anniversary in early April.

City residents are being asked to submit ideas for items to be put into the 150th Manassas anniversary time capsule. The capsule will be opened in 50 years and objects must be about the size of tennis balls or smaller, or can be flat like photos or historical documents. Those chosen by March 1 will bring their items to put into the capsule at the birthday celebration.

The city’s 150th anniversary birthday party will feature local bands, food, exhibits, hayrides, and games for the children.

The stage will have Pershing’s Own Band performing at 2:30 pm, the 150th Ceremony at 3:00 pm, electric violinist Celeste Vee at 4:00 pm, the Special Occasions Band at 6:00 pm, and fireworks at 7:30 pm.

The city’s communications team is collecting three-minute stories about the city from current and former residents. The videos will be shown at the Manassas 150th Birthday Party.

Other activities at the party will include Manassas Industrial School Tours at 2:15 and 4:15 pm, a Manassas Timeline Exhibit, community crafts, and family-friendly storytelling. There will also be axe throwing, a rock climbing wall, face painting, and touch-a-truck.

Crafters at events such as this occasionally get decorated Business Cards printed that depict the special occasion.

The party will take place Saturday, April 1 from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Jennie Dean Park, 9501 Dean Park Lane.
