City to celebrate historical event

History buffs will want to attend the upcoming 4th Annual Civil War Weekend. It will be three days of re-enactments, speeches, and a reenactors parade, all free of charge

Speakers will be generals of that period, like Robert E. Lee, William Tecumseh Sherman, Philip Sheridan, Jubal Early, John B. Gordon and Samuel Cooper. The second day of the event will feature a Civil War Dance with music of the period. That evening will also offer a tour through the Manassas cemetery with stories about its inception and occupants. The second day will have a farmers’ market, the parade, and a children’s scavenger hunt.

Civil War Artillery, Infantry and Cavalry will give military demonstrations and the speaker’s tent will not only have the aforementioned generals speaking, but Ladies of the War like Clara Barton, Dorthea Dix, and Elizabrth Keckley. Free wagon rides will be available for those guests who will want to visit the Liberia Plantation. The last day of the event will feature a period fashion show, Foodways with Marion Dobbins, and a speech by Mrs. Rose Greenhow, a confederate and spy. This event will be rife with subjects that will make great pictures for later poster printing.

The event is scheduled for August 21 to 23, on Museum Lawn in downtown Manassas. Friday and Saturday hours will be 9:00 am until 9:00 pm, and Sunday hours will be 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.
